Newsletter December

Dear Au Pairs and Host families,

Denver comes to life during the holiday season, with millions of twinkling lights, festive parades, special events and much more. I encourage all Au pairs- get together and attend Denver’s Authentic German Christkindl Market in downtown and enjoy all other festivities for the whole month!

City & County Building Holiday Lights (November 29 – January). The largest lighting display in Denver comes on nightly at 6 p.m. at the City & County Building, where 600,000 lights deck the neo-classical building. The bell tower plays carols nightly as well.

Denver Christkindl Market Skyline Park, Downtown Denver (November 22 – December 21). Relive a centuries old German tradition when the annual Denver Christkindl Market kicks off on Friday, November 22, 2013.. The sights, sounds and flavors of the holiday season with a German flair arrive on the 16th Street Mall. Music, holiday lights and typical vendor cabins will dot Skyline Park area across from the Daniels & Fisher Clock Tower.

16th Street Mall Holiday Lights (November 29 – January). Denver’s mile-long pedestrian promenade, the 16th Street Mall, is decorated with more than one million white lights. Skyline Park, located at 16th and Arapahoe, will feature nearly 26,000 lights and a 22 foot tall Christmas tree complete with LED lights choreographed to a variety of holiday songs. Horse drawn carriages ride up and down the mall nightly beginning at 6 p.m., creating a special way to view the display.

9 NEWS Parade of Lights, Downtown Denver (Dec. 6-7) The 9NEWS Parade of Lights is the signature event of the Downtown Denver holiday season. The countless sparkling lights, marching bands, giant balloons, majestic floats and delightful characters will once again wow hundreds of thousands. Viewing along the parade route is free.

New Year’s Eve Fireworks, Downtown Denver, December 31. Ring in the New Year with Denver’s annual New Year’s Eve Fireworks with viewpoints along the 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver. The two spectacular fireworks shows will occur at 9 p.m. and Midnight, taking place simultaneously at two undisclosed sites along the 16th Street Mall. It is recommended that viewers stand along the 16th Street Mall for optimal viewing. New to the festivities will be six live DJs performing along the 16th Street Mall. Each will play Top 40 music from 8pm to midnight, and will do a live countdown at the 9 p.m. fireworks show.

Au pairs, please offer to help out during this holiday season, which can be very stressful for working moms who are also struggling to create a special Christmas for their families.  There are gifts to be wrapped and sent, cookies to be baked, lots of decorating.

However, host families, please do not take undue advantage of your au pair’s kind and generous nature.  Your au pair enjoys a special status with your family.  She is the caregiver for your children, and that is her primary job.  It is important to remember that she needs her time for herself as well.

This is a really fun, festive time of year, and I hope all of you will be able to participate in many holiday events!

Please remember that as au pairs, you must always be responsible! No drinking and driving, no using recreational drugs! Communicate with your host parents if you will be home very late.

Wishing all of you a joyous holiday season!
